Important changes are coming soon to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system. The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) has announced upcoming updates to several freight classifications, which are scheduled to go into effect on Saturday, July 19th, 2025.

These changes will impact the way certain commodities are classified and rated within the LTL shipping environment. As a result, this could affect your freight charges if your shipments fall under the revised classifications.

What You Need to Know:

  • Reclassification of Certain Commodities – Some items may be moved to different NMFC numbers or class ratings.
  • Density-Based Adjustments – The NMFTA continues to transition many items to density-based pricing, meaning the physical dimensions and weight of your shipments will be even more critical in determining the final class and cost.
  • Greater Emphasis on Accurate Data – Accurate weight, dimensions, and packaging descriptions will be increasingly important to avoid reclassifications, reweighs, or rebills.

How This May Affect You:

  • Your current freight class for certain products may change.
  • There may be price adjustments depending on how your products are impacted.
  • Carriers will likely begin enforcing these changes immediately upon the NMFTA’s implementation date.

What You Can Do:

  • Review your current NMFC classifications with your shipping team.
  • Ensure dimensions and weights are accurate and readily available.
  • If needed, we’re happy to help analyze any potentially affected shipments and provide guidance.

Our team is closely monitoring these updates and will continue to provide support and guidance to help you stay compliant and avoid unnecessary freight charges.
